I remember that happening in the episode Bubbled, and reading over the transcript it has some very interesting foreshadowing:

Ruby (Eyeball) Ooh, I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna take your gem and bring it back!
Steven What?! No! Please don't take my gem! Wait, what would even happen to me?
